This work Dr. Schofield has offered to undertake, and, in order to prevent further delay, he has suggested that the consequent addition to the report should be written in Hong Kong immediately after the completion of the

field work.

4.

It is estimated that the total cost

to this Government of Dr. Schofield's visit

and work here would be in the nature of £750, and I have been at some pains to discover whether the report as already presented justifies this further outlay of public

funds. Unfortunately the opinion of

those best qualified to judge in this Colony is that, from the sections already completed, it is impossible to form any opinion as to the potential value of the proposed section. An indication of the expenditure already incurred on this survey

is contained in Sir R.E. Stubb's despatch

referred to in paragraph 1 above.

5. In view of the importance to the

Colony of an accurate knowledge of its

metallic mineral deposits and in view of the sun already spent by this Government

on a survey which lacks completion by one

section only, I am prepared, subject to

your advice and to the approval of the

Legislative Council to authorize the

further expenditure as outlined above.

6.

It is requested that the typescript copy of the

report may be returned to me after consideration.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

1.

As borthest

Governor.
